Zenergy Yoga, of Scottsdale, Arizona, created an informative Yoga for Athletes Fact Sheet consisting of athletes and professional teams that practice yoga, along with listing the benefits that accrue:
- improved breathing
- enhanced core strength
- increased flexibility and range of motion
- improved balance
- relief of chronic pain
- heightened focus
- while noting the advantages of cross training, especially beneficial for single sport athletes
- and suggesting that overall, yoga’s many benefits provide something for every athlete
By the way, I found the MindBodyGreen article by doing a web search, but how coincidental that MindBodyGreen was started by one of the people interviewed for the New York Times article mentioned at the start of this post!
For those of us who may not be interested in the physical movement of yoga, tai chi offers a calm alternative, and as Jane Brody writes in A Downside to Tai Chi? None That I See, provides perhaps one of the best ways to reduce stress. As she states up front:
I’ve concluded that the proper question to ask yourself may not be why you should practice
tai chi, but why not.
